The Sports Centre was established in 1986 and was the first higher education institution in Malaysia to offer a Bachelor of Sports Science degree programme in 1995. Besides its academic programmes, the Centre also organizes sports activities and co-curricular courses, and manages the coordination of all sports facilities on campus.
Sports development in Malaysia is rapidly growing, with the Ministry of Youth and Sports declaring 2011 as "The Sport Industry Year". The country is entering a new phase where sports could become a significant source of national income. As a result, local sports need to be managed in a professional, scientific and systematic manner. Sport Science is a field that applies scientific principles to sports and practitioners in this field must possess extensive knowledge in various disciplines and be capable of effectively applying both theoretical and practical knowledge. Such expertise can only be gained through formal education at the college or university level.
As the first institution in Malaysia and Asia to offer a Bachelor of Sport Science in 1995, Universiti Malaya has produced over 1,000 graduates from this programme since 1999. These graduates have become leaders in the field, managing sports in both the public and private sectors. In March 2018, the Sports Centre was renamed the Centre for Sport & Exercise Sciences and on 21 October 2022, it was officially upgraded to the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Science.
To become an internationally renowed centre in teaching, learning and research in Sport Science as well as sports services and development.
To lead development in Sports Science through teaching, learnin and research and also provide quality services and encourage sports participation among the campus community in promoting a healhty lifestyle.
