The Sports Centre was established in 1986. It was the first tertiary institution in Malaysia to offer the Bachelor of Sports Science degree programme in 1995. In addition to its academic programme, the Centre also organizes sport activities and co-curricular courses, besides being the co-coordinating body for the usage of all sports facilities on campus.
The development of sports in Malaysia is rapidly increasing. The Ministry of Youth and Sports has named year 2011 as “The Sport Industry Year”. Sport in Malaysia is heading into a new era in which sports can be a source of public income for the nation. Thus local sports should be managed in a profesional, scientific and systematic manner. Sport Science is a field of study that examines aspects of the application of science in sports. Practitioners or prefesional sports sceintists must have high knowledge in various disciplines related to Sports Science and are able to apply the theoretical and practical components effectively. This can only be achieved through formal education at college or university. Being the pioneer institution in Malaysia and Asia that first offered the Bachelor of Sport Science back in 1995, the Universiti Malaya has produced more 1,000 graduates of this programme since 1999. They have been and are taking their role as leaders in this field, managing sports in both public and private sectors. Starting on March 2018 Sports Centre know as CENTRE FOR SPORT & EXERCISE SCIENCES and upgraded to the FACULTY of SPORTS and EXERCISE SCIENCE through the lauching ceremony on 21 October 2022
To become an internationally renowed centre in teaching, learning and research in Sport Science as well as sports services and development.
To lead development in Sports Science through teaching, learning and research and also provide quality services and encourage sports participation among the campus community in promoting a healthy lifestyle.
