DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (PH.D)

This PhD programme is purely based on individual supervised research. At the end of the candidature, a thesis must be submitted and upon successful defense of the paper, the candidate will be granted PhD status. All research proposals must be approved and supervised by the Faculty.

Minimum Duration of Study : 4 semesters
Maximum Duration of Study : 12 semesters

Foreign candidates are required to:

All students must be sufficiently competent in English.

International students must possess at least a band 6 for IELTS or a score of 550 for paper-based total, a score of 213 for computer-based total or a score of 80 for internet-based total for TOEFL if they obtained their Bachelor’s degree from a university in which the medium of instruction is a language other than English. 

or

Pass an English proficiency test approved by the University.

UM offers a course leading to proficiency in Bahasa Malaysia which international students are required to attend before the degree is conferred.

  1. A master's degree from UM or equivalent from any other university, as acknowledged and approved by the Senate

or

  1. Exceptional University Malaya graduates may directly apply for entry into the University's relevant doctoral programs. Candidates with a CGPA standing of 3.7 and above will be offered entry into the program and will also be given due consideration for the University Malaya's scholarship funding, subject to applicable terms and conditions

For PhD programme by research candidate can enter anytime.
